Sevilla, meanwhile, are the most decorated team in Europa League history. Los Hispalenses are seven-time winners of UEFA’s secondary club competition, including three consecutive triumphs from 2014-16.
Man City and Sevilla have previously met four times, all of them coming in the Champions League group stages. The clubs were grouped together in the 2015/16 season and again in 2022/23; the Citizens were victorious on all four occasions.
Last season, Man City earned a 3-1 win over Sevilla at the Etihad Stadium in the sixth and final instalment in Group G. This saw Sevilla demoted to the Europa League, of which the Spanish team took full advantage and they went on to capture the trophy for a record seventh time.
UEFA Super Cup History
The first time the two champions of Europe met in an official fixture was in 1974. Ajax took on AC Milan in a two-legged tie, with the teams hosting alternate legs. Milan won 1-0 at San Siro, before Ajax stormed to a 6-0 victory at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam.

In 2022, Real Madrid overcame German outfit Eintracht Frankfurt by two goals to nil. The previous edition saw Chelsea edge Villarreal on penalties. In 2020, Bayern Munich narrowly beat Sevilla, 2-1, after extra-time.
AC Milan, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are the most successful clubs in UEFA Super Cup history, with five titles apiece. Liverpool have lifted this trophy four times and Atletico Madrid thrice. Ajax, too, have three of these trophies in their collection. The likes of Bayern, Chelsea, Juventus and Valencia are each two-time winners.
Carlo Ancelotti is a four-time champion of the UEFA Super Cup. Pep Guardiola possesses three winners’ medals and the current Man City manager has the chance to draw level with Ancelotti as the joint-most successful coaches in the history of this competition.
