Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade) was founded in March 1945, in the city of Belgrade, which was the capital of Yugoslavia at the time. The team quickly established themselves as a dominant force, taking part in the first few editions of the European Cup.
Red Star Belgrade famously met Manchester United in the 1957/58 European Cup quarter-finals. Matt Busby's side won the tie 5-4 on aggregate to advance to the semi-finals, though this was their last game prior to the fatal Munich air disaster which took the lives of eight Man United players.
Crveno-beli (The Red & Whites) reached the European Cup semi-finals in 1971, which was the closest they came to lifting the title. This changed in 1991 when Red Star Belgrade progressed to the European Cup final and defeated French club Marseille on penalties.
In more recent years, Red Star Belgrade have competed in the UEFA Champions League only a few times. The Serbian outfit shared a group with Liverpool, Napoli & Paris Saint-Germain in 2018/19, and then with Bayern Munich & Tottenham Hotspur the following season, failing to qualify for the knockout stages on both occasions.
A number of former national heroes represented Red Star Belgrade, particularly in the formative years of their senior careers.
Many Crvena Zvezda supporters will claim the club's greatest player to be former captain Rajko Mitić, after whom the club's stadium was renamed in 2014.
Dejan Stanković started out at boyhood club Red Star Belgrade before joining Lazio in 1998. He switched to Inter Milan in 2004 and amassed more than 500 appearances combined for the two Serie A teams.
Nemanja Vidić began his career at Red Star Belgrade and went on to sign for Manchester United in 2006. The Serbia defender won five Premier League titles as well as the Champions League, and he captained MUFC for four years until 2014.
The Red Star Stadium has been the home ground of Crvena Zvezda since 1963. The venue was known as the Red Star Stadium until 2014 when it was renamed in honour of club legend Rajko Mitić.
Stadion Rajko Mitic is the largest stadium in Serbia, with a 51,755 capacity, and it has been dubbed "Belgrade's Marakana" due to its shape resembling the iconic Maracanã Stadium in Brazil.
