UEFA Europa League History

The Europa League was previously known by a few other names, first as the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup from 1955-1971 before it was renamed to the UEFA Cup. In 2009 the competition was once again rebranded, adopting the name we know it as today, the Europa League. Before the advent of the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Cup saw premier teams who finished below the national champions battle it out to win the trophy. It was exclusively a knockout competition.

Tottenham Hotspur were the inaugural winners of the UEFA Cup, thanks to victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, 3-2, in a two-legged final in the 1971/72 season.

Spanish side Sevilla FC have won the tournament on no fewer than seven occasions, winning every final they've taken part in. The next most successful teams in UEFA Cup/Europa League history are Juventus, Inter Milan, Liverpool, Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur having won this competition three times apiece. Other big European clubs have also emerged victorious, with the likes of Chelsea, Ajax and Manchester United all capturing this trophy down the years.

FC Shakhtar Donetsk won the last UEFA Cup final before the Europa League rebrand, beating Werder Bremen in 2009.

Sevilla proved very dominant in the early seasons of the UEFA Europa League, winning three Europa Leagues titles in a row between 2014 and 2016. They have the most Europa League wins, having won it five times under its current guise.

The changing of the format has arguably increased the standing of the competition and it's very much considered a highly prized tournament by the biggest teams in European football.

UEFA Europa League Format

Winning the UEFA Europa League is no simple task. A victorious team will have to fight through league phase and knockout stages to get to the Europa League final and then lift the trophy. Some will also have to have to go through a preliminary knockout round.

Since 2024/25, the Europa League league phase includes 36 teams, with sixteen teams advancing to the Round of 16 after a knockout round for teams finished in position 9 to 24.

The competition was given more importance when UEFA decided in 2015 to reward winners of the Europa League with progress to the Champions League for the next season.

There have been some amazing UEFA Cup and Europa League final matches over the years; here are just a few of the most memorable.

Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 Anderlecht (1983/84)

For much of the history of the UEFA Cup, the final was a two legged occasion with games taking place at each team's home stadium. In 1984 the opening game saw Tottenham, traveling to Brussels to take on Anderlecht, take the lead through Paul Miller only for Morten Olsen secure a draw for the Belgians late on.

The second leg saw Anderlecht face an intimidating atmosphere at White Hart Lane but nonetheless they took the lead when Alexandre Czerniatynski scored on the hour. Graham Roberts netted to take the tie to extra-time and subsequently penalties.

This is when Tony Parks, who wasn't Tottenham's first-choice goalie, saved the final penalty kick to hand the north London side the trophy in truly dramatic circumstances.

Liverpool 5-4 Deportivo Alaves (2000/01)

Few top European finals can compete with the goal-glut that took place at the Westfaldenstadion in Dortmund on May 16th, 2001. Liverpool rushed into an early 2-0 lead, with goals from Markus Babbel and Steven Gerrard, and the Anfield side looked destined to waltz to an easy win, however, Ivan Alonso responded for Alaves before man of the match Gary McAllister made it 3-1 from the spot.

Alaves came out in the second half like a team that has been hammered by coach Mané, with Javi Moreno scoring twice in four minutes to make it 3-3. Robbie Fowler once again Liverpool the lead but Jordi Cruyff took the game to extra-time with an 88th-minute leveler.

The Spanish side was reduced to ten men when substitute Magno was sent off and eventually lost when Gerard Houllier's side had the fortune of a fifth goal, courtesy of an own goal from Delfi Geli, which proved to be the golden goal that gave Liverpool a famous win.

Sevilla 3-2 Inter Milan (2019/20)

Though the 2020 Europa League final was played without fans in attendance due to restrictions that were in place at the time, that didn't impinge on the quality of what proved to be a hugely enjoyable end to end encounter at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne.

Romelu Lukaku scored an early penalty but two goals from Luuk de Jong put Europa League veterans Sevilla in control after half an hour. Burly centre-back Diego Godin made it 2-2 at half-time but Lukaku earned the distinction of scoring at both ends when his own goal, in the 74th minute, gave Julen Lopetegui's side the win in Germany.

Atalanta & Spurs: Europa League Winners

For the first time in their history, Atalanta were crowned champions of UEFA's secondary club competition. In 2024, the Italian outfit beat Xabi Alonso's impressive Bayer Leverkusen side 3-0 in Dublin. Ademola Lookman scored a stunning hat-trick to inflict a shock first defeat of the season on Bayer Leverkusen.

Interest in tickets for the 2025 Europa League final was high due to the fact that some of the biggest teams in European football took part. The fact Manchester United met eventual winners Spurs in Bilbao, meant it was one of the most popular Europa League finals ever.

The difference between the sides in 2025 was a scrappy first-half goal from Brennan Johnson. Spurs defended for much of the second half and were indebted to Micky van der Ven for an acrobatic goal line clearance to secure the 1-0 victory.
