Spanish Super Cup History & Info

The Supercopa de España was formed in 1982, with the aim of pitting the reigning champions of La Liga against the Copa del Rey holders. All but a few editions of this competition have featured one or both of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Initially, if a club had won both titles in the same season, as was the case with Athletic Bilbao in 1983/84, that team would automatically be declared winners of the Super Cup. The rules were amended in the 90s, allowing the Copa del Rey runners-up to partake in the Super Cup in the event the Copa winners had also captured league success. Barcelona became the first Copa del Rey runners-up to win the subsequent Supercopa, doing so in 1996.

The format was further adjusted following the 2018 edition, when it was announced that the winners and runners-up of both La Liga and Copa del Rey would enter the Super Cup, expanding the event from a two-legged final to a three-match event with two semis and the ultimate title-decider.

Since the 2021/22 season, the Spanish Super Cup has been held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The Supercopa has seen some of football's greatest talents on display, unsurprising given the calibre of players at clubs such as Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Barca icon Lionel Messi has scored more goals in the Spanish Super Cup, netting 14 times in 20 appearances for La Blaugrana. Messi won this title eight times, more than any other player.

Two other Barcelona heroes, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets, are seven-time winners of the Supercopa. Busquets has also made the joint-most appearances (20) in this competition, tied with Messi.

Other previous winners of the Supercopa include Fernando Hierro, Carles Puyol, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Sergio Ramos.

Top Managers at Spanish Super Cup

Former Barcelona managers Johan Cruyff and Pep Guardiola have won this trophy three times apiece, though the latter took charge of only half the amount of Supercopa finals his former coach and mentor did.

Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane are both highly-regarded at Real Madrid, and each of them won the Super Cup twice as manager of Los Blancos.

Barcelona won a record 14th Supercopa de España in 2023, with a 3-0 victory over Real Madrid.

Real Madrid reclaimed the Spanish Super Cup in January 2024, beating Barca 4-1 in the final, to move within one of the record tally held by their arch-rivals.

Athletic Bilbao became three-time Supercopa champions in 2021, while Atletico Madrid won this title for only the second in 2014.
