North America Exhibition Matches
Initially, this took the form of interleague games in Canada and exhibition games in nearby Mexico. By the mid-1970s, the league had moved to Japan to further its brand.
NFL Comes to Europe
In 1989 the Philadelphia Eagles took on the Cleveland Browns in an exhibition match at Wembley Stadium in the UK, and this became an annual occasion that was a regular sell-out. Similar games took place in Germany, Spain, and Ireland.
The first regular season game to take place in the United Kingdom, and effectively, therefore, the first instance of the NFL London series, took place in 2007 with the New York Giants defeating the Miami Dolphins 13-10 at Wembley Stadium.
This was billed as the NFL International Series, which is now a fixture in the NFL calendar.
This fixture was a once-a-season event every year until 2012, and in 2013 was expanded to two matches.
Efforts to promote American Football outside the US have been hugely successful, and the ongoing presence of regular season fixtures have aided this.
NFL Finds a New Home in London
Wembley Stadium was the venue for each of the first 15 NFL London games, and in 2016, the New York Giants edged out the Los Angeles Rams at Twickenham Stadium.
Since 2019 the matches have been alternated between Wembley and games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and without fail, these games are played in front of packed stadiums full of ex-pats from the US and English fans who have fallen in love with the NFL.
