The Champions League is without doubt the biggest club football tournament in the world, and over the last three decades it has gone from strength to strength. The first edition of the UEFA Champions League was run in 1992 and was the rebranded version of the European Cup, which itself was founded in 1955.
In 2024/25 the Champions League replaced its traditional group stage with a 36-team league phase, the biggest change to the competition's structure since the group stage itself was introduced in 1991. Instead of six matches in a group of four, every club plays eight matches against eight different opponents in a single league table.
The competition as a whole totals 189 matches, up from 125 under the old group stage. That means more Champions League football, and more chances to be in the stadium for it.
Tickets for the Champions League League Phase are sure to be in big demand with some major clashes between Europe's biggest clubs whetting the appetite to see the famous stars in action.

UEFA Champions League League Phase Explained
Up until 2023/24 the Champions League group stage saw 32 of the best European teams split into eight groups of four teams, with each playing each other twice. The top two teams finishing at the head of each group would then qualify for the Round of 16.
The league phase puts all 36 qualified clubs into a single league table. Each club plays eight matches against eight different opponents: two drawn from each of the four seeding pots, with one played at home and one away in each pair.
Clubs reach the league phase either directly, through their finishing position in their domestic league the previous season, or by coming through the qualifying rounds, which are split into a Champions path for domestic title winners and a League path for everyone else.
Once the league phase is complete, the top eight clubs in the table earn a direct route to the Round of 16. The 16 sides finishing between 9th and 24th enter the knockout play-offs, where the winners of the two-legged ties take the remaining eight places in the last 16. The clubs finishing 25th to 36th are eliminated from European competition altogether.
The league phase is a more involved system than the group stage it replaced, but it delivers what supporters wanted from it: A varied fixture list, far fewer dead rubbers on the final matchday, and a route through to the Round of 16 that stays open until the last night.
The rest of the tournament, to the UEFA Champions League Final, is then run as it always has been, namely two-legged ties up to the one match that settles the tournament at the end of the season.
The process of selecting the teams taking part has also been impacted by the European performance spots allocated on the basis of co-efficient rankings of competing national leagues. In other words, the better that teams from a competing nation have performed, the more available slots will be handed to them in future editions.
Champions League League Phase: Season by Season
The league phase has been played since 2024/25, and it has already shown that topping the table and winning the trophy are very different things.
2025/26
Arsenal produced the first perfect campaign in the format's history, winning all eight of their matches to finish top on 24 points, ahead of Bayern Munich on 21 and Liverpool on 18. Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona, Chelsea, Sporting CP and Manchester City completed the top eight and went straight through to the Round of 16.
Below them the margins were brutal. Real Madrid and Inter Milan both finished on 15 points, a single point outside the automatic places, and dropped into the knockout play-offs. Paris Saint-Germain finished 11th and went on to win the competition, beating Arsenal, the one club who had gone unbeaten, in the final. Twelve clubs were eliminated at the league phase, Napoli, Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, Athletic Club and Villarreal among them.
2024/25
Liverpool set the standard in the format's first season, winning their first seven matches to cruise into the Round of 16, with Barcelona, Arsenal and Inter Milan also finishing in the top eight.
Meanwhile, Manchester City, Real Madrid and even eventual winners Paris Saint Germain had major scares and only scraped through to the knock-out play-offs. City finished 22nd, which left them unseeded and drew them against Real Madrid, a tie that ended their campaign.
On the final matchday, all eighteen matches kicked off simultaneously and there was plenty of drama as all the teams jostled for positions.
Champions League History
In whichever format the competition has been run, the UEFA Champions League remains the most distinguished and respected football tournament in the world.
The undoubted kings of the competition remain Real Madrid, who racked up their 15th title when they overcame Borussia Dortmund in the 2023/24 edition. So far ahead of the pack are Los Blancos, the next most decorated club side in the history of the competition, AC Milan, have racked up less than half the triumphs that the Santiago Bernabeu side have managed (seven wins as of 2024).
Real Madrid's domination of the competition began from its very inception, with the Spanish capital club winning each of the first five editions. Their next period of dominance ran from 2014 to 2024, when, under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane, the La Liga giants won the tournament on no fewer than six occasions.
Paris Saint-Germain are the newest name on the trophy. They won it for the first time in 2025, thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 in Munich, and retained it in 2026 by beating Arsenal on penalties in Budapest, becoming only the second club to win successive titles in the Champions League era.
As for English sides, Liverpool top the table with six titles across the European Cup and Champions League era, ahead of Manchester United on three. Nottingham Forest and Chelsea have two apiece, Forest back to back in 1979 and 1980 and Chelsea in 2012 and 2021, while Aston Villa (1982) and Manchester City (2023) have one each.
It remains, by some distance, the most reputable of all UEFA Club competitions, sitting at the top of the pile when it comes to the three UEFA Club competitions that currently run, namely the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Conference League.
