Samoa will be competing in their ninth successive Rugby World Cup in 2023, and coach Seilala Mapusua will be hoping his side can end a series of five successive tournaments where they've failed to get out of the pool stage.

In 1991 and 1995, then as Western Samoa, the likes of star performer Brian Lima helped to take the team as far as the quarter-finals, while in 1999, defeat to Scotland saw them fall at the quarter-final playoffs.

In 2019 Samoa started brightly with an easy win over a poor Russia side, but then they were thumped 34-0 by Scotland, lost to Japan 38-19, and then Ireland by a score of 47-5 and therefore, 2023 couldn't come quicker for those seeking a fresh start.

Samoa will play England, Argentina, Japan, and Chile in Pool D in France, with games taking place in Bordeaux, Saint-Etienne, Toulouse, and Lille.

Samoa Rugby Union Side Looking to Build On Past Glories

At their peak, Samoa were ranked as high as seventh in the World Rugby rankings, and they achieved a number of big wins against Tier 1 nations. These included fantastic victories that will live long in the memories of fans of the Samoan Rugby union team.

In 2011 they pulled off a famous 32-28 win against Australia in Sydney, and this may well serve as one of their most laudable achievements.

They've also secured wins across Europe with successes in Ireland (1996) and Wales (1999), but it's some time since they've come close to hitting those heights. Samoa's overall record of 15 wins over top opposition covers a period between 1991 and 2014, and those heady days are some way in the past but don't be surprised if they mount a comeback.

They still sit proudly among nations in their region with decent international records against the likes of Tonga and Fiji, albeit less favourably against Australia and New Zealand.
