AFC Ajax History
AFC Ajax was founded in 1900 and has gone on to become one of the most recognised football teams in the world. The Amsterdam-based outfit is the most successful club in the Netherlands, having won a 36th league title in 2022. The majority of these have come in the Eredivisie era, which commenced in 1956.
Ajax enjoyed a dominant spell in the 1930s, prior to the outbreak of WWII, but the club's first true golden period came in the 60s. Young attacker Johan Cruyff became the face of the team, and Dutch football as a whole, as he led Ajax to multiple Eredivisie titles as well as three successive European Cups in the early 1970s.
Cruyff left for FC Barcelona in 1974 but later returned for a second spell in Amsterdam, 17 years after making his first-team debut. He was named manager of Ajax in 1985, just a year after bringing an end to his playing career. Johan Cruyff is eternally etched into Ajax folklore, attested by the club renaming its stadium in honour of the 48-cap Netherlands international following his passing in 2016.
AFC Ajax enjoyed another fruitful spell towards the end of the 20th century, under manager Louis van Gaal. The Dutch coach guided his team to three consecutive Eredivisie titles in the mid-90s, complemented by a UEFA Champions League crown in 1995. Ajax reached the Champions League final the following season and the semi-finals the year after that, but lost to Juventus on both occasions. Since then, the Dutch side hasn't fared well in Europe's premier club competition.
Ajax came within touching distance of the Champions League final in 2019, but Erik ten Hag's men lost to Tottenham Hotspur in dramatic fashion despite holding a two-goal advantage at half-time in their semi-final second-leg tie. This was Ajax's best result in Europe since reaching the quarter-finals in 2002/03, when they lost out to eventual winners AC Milan.
