AZ Alkmaar History & Info

The club was founded in 1967, originally called AZ '67, and would compete in the Dutch Eredivisie for the first time in the 1968/69 season. AZ won the KNVB Beker (Dutch Cup) in 1978 with a 1-0 win against Ajax, marking the club's maiden major trophy.

Three years later AZ became Eredivisie champions with just a single defeat in 34 league matches. The Dutch outfit also won the Dutch Cup that year and even came within touching distance of completing an elusive treble, but ultimately lost out to English side Ipswich Town in the final of the UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League).

Almost 30 years went by before AZ Alkmaar finally reclaimed the Eredivisie title in 2009, reasserting the club's status as the only Dutch team (apart from Ajax, PSV Eindhoven & Feyenoord) to celebrate league honours since 1965.

AZ Alkmaar won its fourth Dutch Cup in 2013, defeating PSV Eindhoven in the final. Adam Maher & Jozy Altidore scored in quick succession to steer AZ to a 2-1 victory at De Kuip.

In more recent years AZ have struggled to keep pace with Ajax, PSV & Feyenoord (collectively known as the "Big Three" in Dutch football), with each of these teams winning the Eredivisie at least once since 2018.

AZ Alkmaar Rivals

In recent times AZ Alkmaar have developed a rivalry with AFC Ajax, with the two clubs located in the same province and separated by less than 30 miles.

Known as "De Noord-Hollandse Derby" ("the North Holland Derby"), fixtures between AZ & Ajax have produced very competitive and intense encounters in seasons gone by.

AZ Alkmaar Stadium

AFAS Stadion (also referred to as the 'Victorie Stadion' by some supporters) has been the home of AZ Alkmaar since 2006, when the stadium opened its doors.

The venue underwent redevelopments during the 2020/21 season, expanding its capacity to 19,478.

For matches in UEFA competitions, this ground is referred to as the 'AZ Stadion'.
