Manchester City might be one of the biggest sides in the footballing world at the moment, however the Champions League is something that the club continue to look to improve in each and every season they compete in the tournament. With the Etihad Stadium boasting the ability to hold a 55,017 capacity crowd for games when played at home, it is a stadium that has all the enthusiasm and excitement to urge the players on to go as far as possible in the competition.
The Citizens, as Manchester City are known amongst their passionate fanbase, have established themselves as a top world side over the last decade or so and have added a number of worldwide names to their squad over the years in order to give themselves the best chance of acquiring the Champions League title. Men such as Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and David Silva have all been involved, whilst men like Manuel Pellegrini, Roberto Mancini and Pep Guardiola have all been in the dugout as well.
Due to their relatively new status within the continental game, Manchester City do not have a record of winning the tournament, however they have been able to put together a string of good performances in the competition.
The Sky Blues managed to reach the semi-finals of the 2015/16 edition of the Champions League, whereas they have reached the quarter-finals on no fewer than two other occasions. Getting out of the Group Stage is generally expected, therefore knockout football can be expected to be seen at the Etihad Stadium each season they are in the competition.
Memorable moments have included hard group stages for Manchester City, with their first return to the tournament in 32 years having provided them with challenges against Bayern Munich, SSC Napoli and Villarreal in 2011/12, whilst they would also go on to play in a group with Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Ajax the following year - a group in which they failed to win a single match.
Spanish outfits, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, have proven to be the biggest problem for the Citizens in recent editions, as they have proven too difficult for the English outfit to get past in recent memory, although things have certainly improved recently.
