Manchester City vs FC Copenhagen History

Manchester City have become a true powerhouse in European football and have regularly been in contention for the UEFA Champions League title in recent years.

The Citizens won a maiden European crown in 2023 with a 1-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League final. Pep Guardiola's side had earlier come within touching distance of the trophy, losing to Premier League rivals Chelsea in the 2020/21 final.

Copenhagen suffered three group-stage exits before finally returning to the last-16 in 2023/24. The Danish side ended runners-up in their group behind Bayern Munich, finishing above both Galatasaray and Manchester United.

The first-ever competitive meeting between Man City and FC Copenhagen came in the form of a two-legged Round of 32 tie in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League). The teams met in the last edition of the competition before it rebranded to the Europa League, as the Citizens claimed a 4-3 victory on aggregate including a 2-1 victory at the City of Manchester Stadium.

Their maiden clash in Europe’s premier club competition came 13 years later as the teams met in the 2022/23 Champions League group stage. Pep Guardiola’s men earned a resounding 5-0 win at the Etihad Stadium on their way to topping their group before ultimately securing European honours for the first time.

The reverse fixture at Parken Stadion ended goalless, though Man City eventually recorded a first win at this ground the following season. The teams were paired together in the Round of 16, as the Citizens ran out 3-1 winners in the Danish capital.
