When thinking of Italian teams and the Champions League together, Inter Milan are one of the football clubs to be immediately thought of by fans all around the world. The Nerazzurri have been highly successful in the competition when they have featured and are a side that many expect to be in and amongst the favourites to lift the trophy when participating. Indeed, the San Siro’s, which is also known as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, capacity of 80,018 can be expected on matchday as fans look forward to the occasion each and every season.
Inter Milan, or Internazionale, have been able to assemble a squad full of superstars throughout their existence, with men with the highest levels of quality having been available all the time. Previous squads included the likes of Ronaldo, Adriano and Samuel Eto’o, whilst more recent teams have seen the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Lautauro Martinez and Christian Eriksen all feature.
The Serie A outfit, as mentioned, have been incredibly successful when competing in the Champions League, having lifted the trophy on no fewer than three times. Those successes came in 1963/64 (their first appearance in the tournament), 1964/65 and 2009/10.
Inter Milan have reached five finals in total as they made appearances in the 1966/67 and 1971/72 showpiece spectacles, however they were handed defeats by Celtic and Ajax respectively in those matches.
I Nerazzurri have plenty of memorable moments in the Champions League competition, with their back-to-back winning efforts in 1963/64 and 1964/65 one of them. They managed to win both tournaments in their first two appearances in the competition, which is an incredibly hard thing to do for any side.Their run to the 2009/10 final was also a memorable campaign in the tournament, as it saw men like Jose Mourinho and Eto’o help guide the Italians to a famous win. The club managed to overcome the challenge of Barcelona on four occasions (two matches in the Group Stages and a Semi-final tie), as well as the Portuguese’s ex-club Chelsea in the knockout round before having to go up against German giants Bayern Munich in the final.
