Atletico Madrid are one of the top Spanish sides to be regularly involved with the Champions League competition every season, however there is a case to be argued that they struggle to get the job done when it matters. Nonetheless, Los Rojiblancos are one of the most experienced sides in the tournament every year and with their 68,456 capacity Estadio Wanda Metropolitano generally full with each and every fixture played, there is always an excitement and buzz around the team.
The Red and White club from the Spanish capital have had a plethora of stars feature for them over the years, whilst Diego Simeone managed to carve out a reputation as a legendary manager during his tenure in the dugout at the club he once played for. Fernando Torres, Alvaro Morata, Saul Niguez and Koke have all played crucial roles, as has Diego Godin at times.
Atletico Madrid are perhaps one of the unluckiest sides to have ever participated in the Champions League over the years, as they have become somewhat bridesmaids of the tournament.
Los Rojiblancos have struggled to get over the line in three of the competitions that they have been involved in, having reached the final only to be defeated. They finished runners-up in 1973/74, 2013/14 and 2015/16 at the hands of Bayern Munich and arch-rivals, Real Madrid, twice respectively - with all three having required the additional of extra-time and/or a penalty shoot-out.
Of course, the Madrid outfit have had a number of memorable moments in the Champions League during their vast number of appearances in the competition. One moment that stands out for those associated with the club includes their 2019/20 feat in which they knocked out holders Liverpool in the Round of 16, whereas they managed to beat both FC Barcelona and Chelsea on their way to the 2013/14 final.
However, that showpiece against Real Madrid is perhaps one of the memorable moments that Los Rojiblancos will want to forget, as they were moments away from winning the competition before Sergio Ramos levelled just moments before the final whistle. Los Blancos then compounded their city neighbours to an emphatic defeat in the additional 30 minutes, as they ran out 1-4 winners.
