Atletico Madrid could be described as the nearly-men of top-tier European club football, with the La Liga side consistently failing to deliver the goods in both the European Cup and its successor, the UEFA Champions League.
Their opponents, Juventus, though, of course, having won the competition, are no strangers to final defeats either.
Atletico Madrid have managed to get to the final of the competition on three occasions; on each occasion, they gave a pretty good account of themselves, only to lose at the death.
Their first effort came in 1974 when they faced off against an all-conquering Bayern Munich side who would go on to win three European Cups on the bounce. On this occasion, Atletico Madrid came incredibly close to lifting the trophy. After a goalless 90 minutes, the game in Brussels went to extra time, and Luis Aragones, who would go on to manage the Spanish national team, put the Colchoneros ahead after 114 minutes, and Juan Carlos Lorenzo’s side looked to be set to win the European Cup, only for Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck to score a last gasp equalizer on 120 minutes.
That had clearly knocked the stuffing out of the Spaniards as they were then thumped 4-0 in the replay two days later.
Their next defeats in the final stages came in the UEFA Champions League era, with losses to local rivals Real Madrid.
In 2014, in a situation mirroring that of 1974, Atletico Madrid looked destined to win thanks to a first-half Diego Godin goal, but after 93 minutes, Sergio Ramos leveled, and Diego Simeone’s side collapsed, losing 4-1 after extra time.
Just two years later, the two teams met again, and this time, Atleti went down on penalties, making it three final losses for the La Liga side.
Juventus won their first European Cup in 1985 when they beat Liverpool in Brussels after a victory that came via a Michel Platini goal in a game that was overshadowed by the tragic events in the Heysel Stadium that evening.
That win came after the Turin side had lost two previous finals in 1973, to Ajax and 1983, to SV Hamburger. In 1996, they picked up their second success, this time defeating Ajax on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Rome.
The Serie A side have since gone on to lose five successive finals. In 1997 to Borussia Dortmund; in 1998, to Real Madrid; in 2003, to AC Milan; in 2015, to FC Barcelona and in 2017, to Real Madrid again.
That’s quite a poor record to lose seven of nine finals, though, on the whole, this is evidence of a side that has regularly battled their way to the very latter stages of the biggest tournament in world football.
Atletico Madrid and Juventus have a lot of history when it comes to European competitive action, with their first meeting occurring in the 1963/64 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, with the Italian side winning 3-1 on aggregate in their Second Round tie.
The same two teams met again the following year, this time in the Semi-Finals of the now-defunct competition, and again Juventus won through, this time via a play-off after a 4-4 aggregate draw.
The two met in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 2014/15 in the group stage, with Turkish international Arda Turan scoring the only goal of the clash at the Vicente Calderon, with the reverse game ending 0-0.
In 2018/19, in the Round of 16, goals from Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin put Simeone’s side in control, only for Juventus to come roaring back in the second leg. Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a fabulous hat-trick to turn the tie around.
The following season the two teams were drawn together in the group stage, where a 2-2 draw was the result in the Spanish capital, and a Paulo Dybala goal separated the teams in Turin.
Among those to have played for both Atletico Madrid and Juventus are Spanish forward Alvaro Morata, Mario Manduzkic, Christian Vieri, Juan Esnaider, keeper Christian Abbiati, and Michele Serena.
