Atletico Madrid fans long to secure a first top-tier UEFA title, having gone so close on several occasions, and the La Liga side will hope that this season will see the club finally deliver on their very obvious potential. The visit of Newcastle United to the Metropolitano promises to be an exciting clash and one that will be keenly fought.

Atletico Madrid reached the Semi-Finals of the European Cup in their first-ever campaign, losing to local rivals Real Madrid, something that would become all too common. Their first final occurred in 1974 when they went up against the mighty Bayern Munich.

In 2013/14, Diego Simeone’s side defeated AC Milan, Barcelona, and Chelsea to book a berth in the final, where they faced Real Madrid. On this occasion, Diego Godin’s first-half goal appeared to be leading the Colchoneros to a hugely well-earned title. Sadly, Sergio Ramos had other ideas, the defender netting in the 93rd minute to take the game to extra-time.

Here they once again fizzled out, conceding three goals to complete a 4-1 loss. Two years later, Simeone had the chance to exact some revenge when they played Real Madrid in the final again.

Unfortunately, a third successive final loss followed, with Atletico Madrid losing on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Newcastle United do not have as much experience in the competition as their opponents but have enjoyed some memorable nights in the tournament nonetheless.

Their first UEFA Champions League adventure came in 1997/98, during which they secured a famous 3-2 win over Barcelona, with Faustino Asprilla scoring a hat-trick at St James’ Park, though Kevin Keegan’s side did not make it out of their group.

Five years later, they returned to the competition, this time getting through the first group phase, only to lose in the second, though they did manage to beat Juventus in one of their games, the Italian side going to be losing finalists in this season.

The following year Sir Bobby Robson’s side lost in the Third Qualifying Round before going on an impressive run in the UEFA Cup, where they lost to Marseille in the Semi-Finals, with Didier Drogba doing the damage.
