Both of these teams have experience playing in the UEFA Champions League final, though only one of them have actually gone all the way and hoisted this majestic trophy. Borussia Dortmund became champions of Europe in 1997, defeating Juventus in the final held at the Olympiastadion in Munich.
They then failed to qualify for the competition for over thirty years, a run that saw them return to the tournament in its new rebranded format, namely the UEFA Champions League.
In their second season, back to their best, they won the tournament, securing safe passage to the final, having completed an impressive Semi-Final victory over Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United.
They went into the 1996/97 UEFA Champions League Final as underdogs but were two up at half-time against Juventus thanks to a double from Karl-Heinz Riedle. Alessandro Del Piero got the Turin side back into the game when he came off the bench to score a backheel past Stefan Klos.
With 20 minutes remaining, Ottmar Hitzfeld threw on Lars Ricken, and without a minute, he had lobbed Juventus keeper Angelo Peruzzi to complete a 3-1 victory in Switzerland.
Their next UEFA Champions League Final, in 2013, didn’t end quite so well. On that occasion, Jurgen Klopp’s side took on Bayern Munich in an all-German final at Wembley Stadium and saw Dortmund beaten by a late Arjen Robben winner.
Whilst Borussia Dortmund’s success rate of one win from two finals might not seem all that comprehensive, it looks frankly astounding when you compare it to how Atletico Madrid have done in both European Cup and UEFA Champions League Finals.
In the three that they’ve taken part in, they’ve been well-placed to win each, only to end up on the losing side on each occasion.
The first of these came in 1974 when they took on Bayern Munich. Juan Carlos Lorenzo’s side went ahead in the 114th minute of the game when Luis Aragones scored against their German opponents, and they looked set to win when Hans-Georg Schwarznebeck scored a 120th-minute equalizer, sending the game into a replay four days later, on which occasion Bayern Munich thrashed Atletico Madrid 4-0.
40 years later, Diego Simeone’s side looked to reverse their fortunes, and a Diego Godin goal looked set to do just that. However, Sergio Ramos had other ideas, scoring a 93rd-minute header for Real Madrid to force the game into extra time, but it was clearly Atletico had had the stuffing knocked out of them, and Carlo Ancelotti’s side scored three more goals to run out 4-1 winners.
Just two years later, in 2016, the same two sides met in the final again, and this time, the game ended 1-1 and went to penalties in Milan, and it was Juanfran who missed the only spot-kick of the shoot-out, leading to yet another loss.
A select few individuals have represented both clubs, including Dortmund legend Mirko Votava, who spent eight years with Borussia before moving to Atletico in 1982, where he duly won the Copa del Rey during his three-year stint in the Spanish capital.
Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel has also played for both teams.
The first time these teams met in the UEFA Champions League was in the group stage of the 1996/97 campaign. Dortmund ran out 1-0 winners at Estadio Vicente Calderón before Atletico returned the favour with a 2-1 victory at Signal Iduna Park. Later that season the German side would go on to clinch Champions League glory for the first time.
More than two decades passed before the two sides reconvened in the Champions League, again in the group phase, in 2018/19. Dortmund treated their home supporters to a joyous night as they thumped Atletico, 4-0. Raphaël Guerreiro netted twice with Axel Witsel and Jadon Sancho also on the scoresheet.
The return fixture saw Los Rojiblancos record a 2-0 win at Estadio Metropolitano, with goals from Saúl Ñíguez and Antoine Griezmann.
