Atletico Madrid have a vast level of experience when it comes to both European football as a whole as well as within the confines of the European Cup and its successor, the UEFA Champions League.

Unfortunately for the Spanish capital club, as of 2023, they are still chasing their first title, albeit they have nonetheless made a real impact in the competition over the years.

Their first campaign came in 1958/59 when they made it all the way to the Semi-Finals before they were beaten by local rivals Real Madrid in a play-off after drawing 2-2 on aggregate.

1973/74 saw their first European Cup Final appearance when they came up against Bayern Munich, forcing the game to a replay after a 1-1 draw. Juan Carlos Lorenzo’s side were then heavily beaten by the German side, who triumphed 4-0.

In 2012/13, Diego Simeone’s side took on Real Madrid in Lisbon, and a goal from Diego Godin seemed set to give Atletico Madrid a famous win, but Sergio Ramos netted in injury time to force the game into extra time where Gareth Bale, Marcelo, and Cristiano Ronaldo all scored to complete a 4-1 win for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

Just two seasons later, the two teams met again in the final; this time, it was Atletico who took the game into extra time when Yannick Carrasco scored a late equalizer. Once again, Real Madrid got the upper hand, though, netting all five of their penalties to take the win.

Atletico’s visitors, Napoli, have not had the greatest run of form in the competition themselves, indeed it wasn’t until 2022/23, the club’s tenth campaign, that they made it as far as the Quarter-Finals, where they were beaten by Serie A rivals AC Milan.

Prior to that loss, the eventual Serie A champions had impressed in wins over Liverpool, Red Bull Salzburg, and Eintracht Frankfurt.
