Atletico Madrid vs Inter Milan History

Only one of these teams have been crowned champions of UEFA's premier club competition, with this title the one that has eluded Atletico Madrid for many years now. Los Rojiblancos have reached the European Cup / UEFA Champions League final no fewer than three times, but they were on the losing side on each and every occasion.

In 1974, Bayern Munich swept past Atletico, 4-0, in the European Cup final replay following a 1-1 stalemate. Uli Hoeneß and Gerd Müller scored twice apiece for the Bundesliga giants.

In more recent times, Atletico were defeated by local rivals Real Madrid not once but twice in the Champions League final. Diego Simeone's men were on the brink of European glory before Sergio Ramos equalised for Los Blancos in the dying embers of regular time. Real Madrid subsequently ran riot in extra-time, earning a 4-1 victory in Lisbon. Two years later Atletico were again on the losing side, this time on penalties following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.

Inter Milan, meanwhile, are multi-time winners of this competition. The Nerazzurri clinched back-to-back European Cup titles in 1964/65, beating Real Madrid and SL Benfica in the finals. In the Champions League era, Inter ascended to the throne in 2010, under the tutelage of José Mourinho. The Milanese side overcame Bayern in the final, thanks to two goals from Diego Milito.

Inter reached the Champions League final again in 2023, but lost to maiden winners Manchester City. The men in blue and black also previously fell short in the European Cup final, to Celtic in 1967 and then to AFC Ajax five years later.

Perhaps there is no individual more synonymous with both these clubs than Diego Simeone. The former Argentina midfielder had two spells as an Atletico player, on either side of his time in Italy with Inter and Lazio. Simeone made more than 250 appearances combined for Atletico and Inter, and he was later appointed manager of the Spanish side in 2011.

A few other former players also represented both these clubs:

• Uruguay icon Diego Forlán played almost 200 times for Atletico before he signed with Inter in 2011. The forward made only a handful of outings for the Nerazzurri before returning to South America.

• Another ex-Uruguay international, Diego Godín spent the bulk of his senior career in the Spanish capital. He racked up 389 appearances for Atletico and was elected captain by Simeone in 2018, though the defender joined Inter on a free transfer just a year later.

• João Miranda was Godín's sparring partner in central defence during the early years of Simeone's reign, before the 58-cap Brazil international switched to Inter in 2016. Miranda ended his career with a combined 299 appearances for Atletico and Inter.

Despite both these teams regularly featuring in Europe' elite club competition, they only shared a pitch in the Champions League for the first time in 2024 when Atletico were paired with Inter in the Round of 16. The Italian outfit earned a narrow 1-0 win in the first leg, with Marko Arnautović bagging the decisive goal at the San Siro.

The only previous meeting between Atletico and Inter came in the 2010 UEFA Super Cup. The Nerazzurri were the Champions League holders at the time, while Los Rojiblancos had recently triumphed in the Europa League. Atletico claimed victory by two goals to zero, after Rafael Benítez had replaced the outbound José Mourinho as Inter manager in the preceding summer.
