The Champions League has become one of the iconic tournaments in world football since it was created and Liverpool are certainly a football club that has helped to build the reputation of the competition into what it is today. The Reds have been incredibly successful over the years and have produced a number of unforgettable moments when playing in matches to try and add to their trophy collection. Therefore, the club’s 53,394 iconic Anfield stadium truly becomes alive with passionate fans urging their team to continue to recreate the past.
The Reds have had a number of famous stars take to the field for them in previous editions of Europe’s elite club competition, with men such as Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia having created a name for themselves in the past, whereas men like Jordan Henderson, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Trent Alexander-Arnold have all etched their own names in history in recent years.
Liverpool have been successful in the Champions League over the years, as the Premier League outfit have been able to obtain no fewer than six winners medals in their history. Those victories occurred in 1976/77, 1977/78, 1980/81, 1983/84, 2004/05 and 2018/19.
The Reds have also reached three other finals in their history, having suffered defeats to Juventus in 1984/85, AC Milan in 2006/07 as the Italians got revenge for the famous 2004/05 final; and in 2017/18 when they were beaten by Real Madrid in the Ukraine.
Of course, the 2004/05 final in Istanbul is perhaps one of the most memorable moments in Champions League history, not just in Liverpool’s. The English side looked down and out by half-time as they were already trailing 3-0.
However, the side led by Rafa Benitez at the time, managed to defeat all the odds and produced a comeback that will be remembered forever. Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer and Alonso all scored to send the tie to penalties before Jerzy Dudek became the hero in the penalty shoot-out.
Other iconic favourable moments include their success against FC Barcelona in the 2018/19 tournament after coming from a 3-0 defeat in the first-leg to record a 4-0 victory at Anfield to progress to the final, whilst Gerrard’s goal against Olympiakos in the 2004/05 tournament get them on their way to winning the whole competition as they looked to be going out in the group stages.
Goal fests against Chelsea have occurred in the past as well, although their final against Real Madrid in 2017/18 is a moment to forget as Loris Karius had a nightmare in between the sticks for the reds, whilst Gareth Bale arguably scored one of the best goals to have ever been recorded in a final.
