Liverpool vs Real Sociedad Tickets

Liverpool have won the competition six times, with their victories coming in both the European Cup era and in the period since the tournament was rebranded to become the UEFA Champions League.

Legendary boss Bill Shankly failed to bring the trophy to Anfield, though he clearly won just about everything else during his lengthy spell in charge, and it was his successor, Bob Paisley, who ended that drought.

The famous manager took Liverpool to the final of the 1977 European Cup, where they saw off the challenge from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach in Rome. They won the competition the following year, defeating Club Brugge 1-0 at Wembley Stadium.

In 1981, Paisley secured his, and Liverpool’s, third success with a narrow win over Real Madrid.

Paisley’s replacement, Joe Fagan, only spent two years in charge of Liverpool but won the European Cup in his first campaign, beating AS Roma on penalties at the Stadio Olimpico.

The following year, the club faced Juventus at the Heysel Stadium, the game becoming something of a forgotten encounter due to the disastrous events of that evening in Brussels.

It would take another twenty years for Liverpool to return to the final of the competition, and Spanish boss Rafa Benitez helped his side beat AC Milan in Istanbul, something that looked very unlikely when his side went in at half-time 3-0 down.

They came out for the second half ready for battle, and incredibly, within 16 minutes of the restart, Liverpool were 3-3. Still, the hard work was still very much to be done, and keeper Jerzy Dudek pulled off a number of outstanding saves to take the game to extra time and then penalties where the Polish keeper kept out two efforts while a third, from Serginho, missed the goal entirely.

Andrei Shevchenko missed the all-important fifth penalty, and the crown was Liverpool’s, in quite astounding circumstances.

2018/19 saw Liverpool claim their sixth title with a comfortable win over Tottenham Hotspur, with Jurgen Klopp’s side having already beaten the likes of Bayern Munich, FC Porto and Barcelona on their way to the final in Madrid.

Real Sociedad, on the other hand, are not seasoned campaigners in the competition. Their first outing came in 1981/82 when they were knocked out by CSKA Sofia in the First Round, but the next season showed a real improvement.

Wins over Celtic and Sporting Lisbon saw them get to the Semi-Finals, where they were knocked out by Hamburger SV.

Their first season in the UEFA Champions League era came in 2003/04 when they got through a tough group before losing to Lyon in the Round of 16. The Txuri-Urdinak had to wait another decade before qualifying for the competition again and, this time, finished rock bottom of their group. 2023/24 is, therefore, the team’s third Champions League adventure.

Liverpool vs Real Sociedad Head-to-Head

Liverpool and Real Sociedad have met on just one other European occasion, and that came back in 1975. Shankly’s side drew the Basque Country side in the Second Round and duly thumped them 3-1 in San Sebastian, with goals from Steve Heighway, Ian Callaghan, and Phil Thompson doing the damage.

The second leg was even worse for the Spanish side, Liverpool winning 6-0 at Anfield, with Ray Kennedy netting twice and John Toshack, David Fairclough, Steve Heighway, and Phil Neal all getting on target.

Liverpool vs. Real Sociedad Connections

A few players have played for both Liverpool and Real Sociedad, including Norway international Bjorn Tore Kvarme, Irish forward John Aldridge, and Sander Westerveld.

Another star with connections to both teams is midfield magician Xabi Alonso. The Spanish international came through the ranks at Real Sociedad and made 124 appearances for Real Sociedad before moving to Liverpool in 2004.

He quickly became a cult hero on Merseyside and played 210 games for Liverpool, scoring 19 goals, before he was lured to Real Madrid in 2009, having played a key role in that famous 2005 UEFA Champions League triumph.

Additionally, Liverpool playing legend John Toshack, who scored 96 goals in 247 games for the club between 1970 and 1978 (winning all manner of honours in the process), went on to manage Real Sociedad between 1985 and 1989, helping the club to a Copa de Rey title in 1987.
