The club’s sixth success came in 2018/19 and, in many ways, is perhaps the crowning glory given the level of opposition Liverpool dealt with en route to the final.

They had to fight their way through a group that included Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli, and Red Star Belgrade and then overcome giants Bayern Munich, FC Porto, and then Barcelona to set up an encounter with fellow Premier League side Tottenham.

Here, they eased to victory with goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi to win the competition once again.

In comparison, RC Lens are novices in the competition. The plucky French side, up to 2023/24, had only appeared in the UEFA Champions League on two occasions, and in both of those, they failed to qualify from their group.

The number of players who have represented both Liverpool and RC Lens is fairly small but includes the following. Midfielder Alou Diarra (albeit the French international failed to make an appearance for the English side during his three years with the club), Czech Republic star and Anfield hero Vladimir Smicer, Djimi Traore, El Hadji Diouf and Cameroon international keeper Charles Itandje.

Another individual who represented both clubs was manager Gerard Houllier. The French boss spent three years in charge of Lens in the mid-1980s and, in 1998, took charge of Liverpool, having previously been in place as part of pairing with Roy Evans.

In the six years in charge, he helped the club to silverware in the form of FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup, and UEFA Super Cup wins before he left in 2004. He sadly passed away in 2020.
