Liverpool are one of the most successful clubs in European Cup/UEFA Champions League history. As of 2023, only Real Madrid and AC Milan had won more titles, and no other British team has come close to reaching the heights that the Anfield side have attained over the course of the history of Europe’s premier club tournament.
Liverpool fans have got to experience some incredible encounters in the competition, particularly those that have taken place in their home stadium. Here’s a look at three such occasions.
Bob Paisley’s side were drawn against French side Saint-Etienne in the Quarter-Finals of the European Cup and lost the first leg 1-0, and though Kevin Keegan leveled the tie early on in the second leg, Dominique Bathenay scored a crucial away goal five minutes into the second half.
Ray Kennedy put Liverpool ahead on the night on the hour, but they were very much still set to lose the tie on away goals. Paisley then threw on 20-year-old sub David Fairclough who went on to score a memorable goal that saw the team qualify, and they went on to win the first of their European Cup titles. An occasion that is very much written in Liverpool folklore.
Another iconic occasion came in December 2004. Liverpool needed to beat Olympiakos in their final group game to secure qualification to the knockout stages. Rivaldo had other ideas, the brilliant Brazilian putting the Greek side ahead after 26 minutes.
Florent Sinama Pongolle leveled just after the break, and Rafa Benitez’s side pushed and pushed for the winner. Youngster Neil Mellor provided the second, but it was Steven Gerrard’s long-range world-class effort that blew the roof off Anfield.
Another night not to be forgotten came in the Semi-Finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2018/19; with Liverpool three goals down to FC Barcelona from the first leg, Jurgen Klopp’s side had a mountain to climb.
Incredibly an opener from Divock Origi and a brace from Georginio Wijnaldum had leveled the game on aggregate. Then, the unthinkable occurred. Trent-Alexander Arnold opted to take a slick, swift corner kick as Barcelona dawdled, and Origi fired home to send the home crowd into ecstasy.
Four of their six wins came during the European Cup era, with those all coming in a relatively short space of time. Wins in 1977, 1978, 1981, and 1984 marked the English club out as the best in Europe and very much the side to beat.
That run came to an end in Brussels in 1985 when Liverpool lost to Juventus in a final more well-remembered for the Heysel tragedy.
It took another two decades for Rafa Benitez to bring the trophy back to the club after an astonishing win over AC Milan in Istanbul.
Jurgen Klopp then made it six titles in 2018/19, a triumph more memorable for the knockout stage wins over Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona than their comfortable victory over Premier League rivals Tottenham.
In comparison, RB Leipzig are very much novices in the competition. The Bundesliga side were only formed in 2009, and therefore, their relative lack of experience is understandable.
RB Leipzig played in Europe for the first time in 2017/18, when they were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League at the group stage before going on a smart run to the UEFA Europa League Quarter-Finals.
Since then, they’ve got to the Round of 16 twice and, in 2019/20, got all the way to the Semi-Finals of the UEFA Champions League, where they were easily beaten by Paris Saint-Germain.
These two teams have met in Europe on one other occasion, and that came in the Round of 16 in 2020/21.
In the first leg at the Red Bull Arena, goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane earned Klopp’s side a comfortable 2-0 away win, and in the return game, the same two players netted again to earn the Premier League side a 4-0 aggregate win.
A few players have played for both Liverpool and RB Leipzig, including midfielder Naby Keita, keeper Peter Gulacsi, Ibrahima Konate, Fabio Carvalho, and midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.
