Liverpool History in the League Cup

As with most competitions they compete in, Liverpool are one of the very best teams in the Carabao Cup. With that said, it comes as no surprise that Liverpool tickets are among the most popular of all competitors in the EFL Cup.

The Merseysiders took part in the inaugural Football League Cup in the 1960/61 season, though didn't have a profound impact on the latter stages of the tournament. Fast forward 60+ years and Liverpool FC have emerged as the most successful club in the history of this competition.

Liverpool played in the final of this competition for the 14th time in 2024, and no other team has featured in the Carabao Cup final more times than the Anfield outfit. The Reds also reached the semi-finals for a record 19th time after thrashing West Ham United in the quarter-finals.

This impressive run continued in 2025, as Liverpool reached another final, where they will play Newcastle United at Wembley. Their 20th semi-final in the League Cup, was a come-from-behind win over Tottenham.

Liverpool Top Achievements in the League Cup

LFC won this trophy for the first time in 1981 under manager Bob Paisley and successfully defended their crown three years in a row, but only celebrated League Cup success once more before the turn of the century.

Twice did Liverpool win this cup under manager Gerard Houllier, first in 2001 when the Reds captured a treble of cups – also winning the FA Cup and UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League) – with an additional League Cup title two years later.

Success in this competition became scarce for LFC over the next 20 years. Legendary former player Kenny Dalglish took up a second spell as manager at Anfield in 2011 and subsequently steered the team (with the likes of Steven Gerrard & Luis Suarez) to the League Cup final 12 months later, and they went on to beat Cardiff City on penalties.

In 2022 Liverpool clinched the League Cup title for the 9th time with a penalty-shootout victory over Chelsea at Wembley Stadium. Two years later that record tally became 10 as the Reds beat the same opponents in the Carabao Cup final; Virgil van Dijk netted the winning goal in a 1-0 triumph for Jürgen Klopp's side.

Liverpool Memorable Moments in the Carabao Cup

Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen were each on target as the Reds overcame arch-rivals Manchester United, 2-0, at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

The 2022 Carabao Cup final saw little separating the sides as Liverpool & Chelsea failed to break the deadlock after extra-time. All 20 outfield players buried their spot-kicks, as did Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, before Kepa Arrizabalaga blazed his effort over the crossbar to hand LFC the League Cup trophy for a record 9th time.
