Carabao Cup Semi-Finals 2023/24

The Carabao Cup semi-finals this season definitely have something of a David vs Goliath feel to them, and there's no doubt many football fans will be rooting for the underdogs to reach the Carabao Cup final.

Chelsea vs Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough made it to the last-four with wins over Bradford City (League Two), Huddersfield Town (Championship), Bolton Wanderers, Exeter City, and Port Vale (all League One), before drawing Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

The Blues travel to the Riverside Stadium on 8 January 2024, and then Stamford Bridge hosts Chelsea vs Middlesbrough 14 days later. Chelsea beat Newcastle on penalties in the quarter-finals to earn a 16th appearance in the League Cup semis for the Blues.

Boro made the semi-finals four times in the 90s and early 2000s, reaching the final on three occasions with a long-awaited maiden League Cup success in 2004.

Liverpool vs Fulham

In the other semi final, Liverpool are up against Fulham. The Reds first reached the semi-finals, and subsequent final, of this competition in 1978 before going on to win a fourth consecutive League Cup title in 1984.

The Merseyside outfit advanced to the semi-final stage for a record 19th time in 2023/24. Liverpool welcome the Cottagers to Anfield on 8 January, before Fulham and the Reds square off two weeks later at Craven Cottage.

EFL Cup Semi-Final History

The Carabao Cup presents the first opportunity of the season to win a domestic trophy. The competition sees 92 teams across the English Football League fight it out to become winners of the League Cup.

The 72 non-Premier League teams enter the Carabao Cup at the first round, before Premier League teams not competing in Europe join in the second round. British clubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League or Conference League are drawn in the third round, where 32 teams remain.

It is generally uncommon for teams in the EFL Championship (or below) to reach the League Cup semi-finals, though it isn't unheard of.

Bristol City made it to the semis in 2017/18, courtesy of wins over Crystal Palace and Manchester United. Bristol bowed out to eventual winners Manchester City but put up a courageous fight with a 5-3 aggregate score.

The following season saw Burton Albion progressed to the Carabao Cup semi-final, beating Aston Villa, Burnley and Nottingham Forest along the way. The Brewers were playing in the third tier of English football at the time and ultimately suffered a 10-0 aggregate loss to eventual Cup winners Manchester City.

In 2020/21 Brentford secured victory over two Premier League-level opponents, Fulham and Newcastle United, before exiting at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur in the last-four.

Middlesbrough secured a spot in the Carabao Cup semi-finals in 2023/24. Boro were placed 13th in the Championship when they advanced from the quarters, having not faced any team ranked above them in the English football pyramid.

EFL Cup Semi-Final: Memorable Matches

The EFL Cup has had a flurry of different names over the years, due to sponsorship and naming rights of the competition. It is currently backed by Carabao Energy Drink, hence the name Carabao Cup.

Prior to being called the Carabao Cup (2017-present), this tournament had been referred to as the Capital One Cup (2012-16), Carling Cup (2003-12), and Coca-Cola Cup (1992-98) among others.

Here are a few unforgettable League Cup semi final contests down the years:

Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 Chelsea - 2001/02

Tottenham Hotspur put five past fellow London club Chelsea to overturn the first-leg deficit and earn a 6-3 win on aggregate in the EFL Cup semi-finals.

Tim Sherwood and Teddy Sheringham were amongst the scorers, after Les Ferdinand had nicked a goal for Spurs in the first leg at Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 Arsenal - 2007/08

Six years later, Spurs claimed a famous 6-2 aggregate win over arch rivals Arsenal, including a remarkable 5-1 victory at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham went on to edge Chelsea in the Carling Cup final that year.

Manchester United 3-1 Manchester City - 2009/10

This Manchester derby came just a few months after Carlos Tevez controversially switched to Man City immediately after ending a two-year association with their crosstown rivals. The Argentina striker scored twice in the first leg at the Etihad Stadium as the Citizens took a 2-1 lead to Old Trafford.

The return leg saw Tevez once again find the back of the net at his old stomping ground, but Wayne Rooney's stoppage-time winner gifted the Red Devils a 4-3 win on aggregate. Sir Alex Ferguson's side went on to capture back-to-back League Cup titles as Manchester United won this trophy for just the fourth time.
