Inter Milan vs Atletico Madrid History

Both Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid have been in the mix for UEFA Champions League title in recent times. Only one of them, however, has actually gone on to hoist the most prestigious prize in club football.

Inter clinched back-to-back European Cups in the mid-1960s, overcoming Real Madrid and SL Benfica, some four decades before the Nerzzurri captured Champions League glory in 2010. José Mourinho's side beat Bayern Munich in the final, to complete a historic Treble for the Italian outfit. Atletico Madrid also celebrated success in Europe that year, winning the 2009/10 Europa League.

That was a first piece of silverware for Atletico in non-domestic competition and Los Rojiblancos added a further two Europa League crowns to their collection, in 2011/12 and 2017/18. Atletico lost not once but twice against local rivals Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final, first in 2014 and then again two years later.

More recently, in 2023, Inter were also defeated in the Champions League final as Manchester City claimed European honours for the first time.

• Diego Simeone is the most prevalent link between these two clubs, having spent time at both Inter and Atletico during his playing career. The former Argentina midfielder played 167 times across two spells with Los Rojiblancos, sandwiching his stints at Inter and then Lazio in the late 90s and early 2000s. Simeone was named manager of the Spanish outfit in December 2011 and he has overseen more than 650 matches as Atletico Madrid manager.

• Uruguay icon Diego Forlán racked up 198 appearances for Atletico before switching to Inter in 2011. He spent just a year in Italy and was limited to just 20 outings for the club.

• Forlán's countryman, Diego Godín spent the bulk of his career playing for Atletico Madrid. The central defender made 389 appearances for Los Rojiblancos and he was elected captain by Simeone in 2018 before Godín joined Inter on a free transfer the following year.
