Historically neither of these teams have been a dominant force in European football. In recent times, however, both clubs have emerged among the richest in the world, with bottomless pits of money to support their respective on-field endeavours.
Manchester City fought long and hard to capture UEFA's top prize and finally achieved this in 2022/23. Pep Guardiola's team completed a remarkable Treble by lifting the Champions League trophy with victory over Inter Milan. MCFC had exited to Real Madrid in the semi-finals the previous year and also lost to Chelsea in the 2021 Champions League final.
Paris Saint-Germain, on the other hand, continue the hunt for a maiden European title, having come agonisingly close in recent years. The Parisiens were knocked out by none other than Man City in the Champions League semi-finals in 2021. The season prior saw PSG miss out on UCL glory with defeat to Bayern Munich in the final. PSG also reached the semi-finals back in 1994/95, but were unable to overcome AC Milan.
Riyad Mahrez scored thrice in his four matches versus PSG, with all three of them coming in the semi-finals of the 2020/21 season.
There've been a select few players who have worn the colours of both Man City and PSG :
• George Weah had a very brief spell at Maine Road, playing no more than nine times for Manchester City during the 2000/01 season. Winner of the Ballon d'Or in 1995, Weah joined MCFC from AC Milan where he had played for almost five years after moving from PSG.
• Nicolas Anelka developed in the PSG Academy before leaving for Arsenal in 1997. The France striker re-signed with PSG in 2000 but then switched to Man City two years later.
• Sylvain Distin also joined Man City from PSG in 2002 and he went on to make more than 200 appearances for the Sky Blues.
The first time PSG and Man City shared a pitch was during the group stage of the UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League) in the 2008/09 season. The match ended goalless at the City of Manchester Stadium.
In 2016 these teams finally met in UEFA's premier club competition for the first time. The clash took place in the Champions League quarter-finals, as Zlatan Ibrahimović scored in a 2-2 draw in the first leg before Kevin De Bruyne scored the winning goal at the Etihad Stadium to put Man City through to the semi-finals.
PSG and Man City would next meet in the UCL semi-finals in 2021. De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez were both on target at the Parc des Princes as the Citizens won 2-1 in Paris and 4-1 on aggregate. Ultimately, though, Guardiola's side lost to Chelsea in the Champions League final.
The 2021/22 season saw PSG and Man City share a Champions League group for the first time. Lionel Messi scored to seal a 2-0 triumph for the Parisiens at home, before the Premier League outfit came from behind to win 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.
