Real Sociedad, meanwhile, first took part in the European Cup in 1981/82 after winning the first of their back-to-back LaLiga titles. A first-round exit came in their debut campaign, but the following season they did very well to get to the semi-finals, where they were beaten by eventual winners SV Hamburg.

La Real don’t have the best of records in the Champions League era, with the Round of 16 being the furthest they have reached in the competition as of February 2024.

Prior to meeting in the 2023/24 Champions League Round of 16, PSG and Real Sociedad had never contested a competitive meeting. Their maiden clash ended 2-0 in favour of the Parisiens, after Kylian Mbappé had opened the scoring.
