The meeting of Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan is a thrilling footballing encounter between two of Europe's most glamorous cities. Both clubs are titans in their own right, with a history of success, albeit to different degrees.
PSG have dominated French football since being acquired by Qatari investors in 2011. They’ve signed the best players in the world - including Leo Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe - and have won many Ligue 1 titles in this period.
Nevertheless, their ultimate ambition remains the elusive UEFA Champions League trophy, which has continued to elude them. The Parisians reached their first Champions League final in the 2019/20 season but narrowly fell to Bayern Munich in the final.
AC Milan, the Italian footballing powerhouse have achieved plenty of success on the European stage. They’ve won an astonishing seven UEFA Champions League titles - a record surpassed only by Real Madrid. However, their last taste of European glory harks back to the 2006/07 season.
Milan's fortunes have fluctuated in recent years, frequently missing out on Champions League qualification. Yet, they are currently experiencing a resurgence, having secured the Serie A title in the 2021/22 season and advancing to the Champions League semi-finals the following year.
PSG and AC Milan were drawn together in the 2023/24 Champions League group stage, marking their first competitive meeting in over two decades. Their previous encounter took place during the 2000/01 season when they were drawn in a Champions League group alongside Galatasaray and Deportivo La Coruna. Both matches ended in 1-1 draws, and neither PSG nor AC Milan progressed to the knockout stages.
Before that, AC Milan and PSG crossed paths in the 1994/95 Champions League semi-final. Dejan Savicevic shone as the star of the show, contributing two goals and an assist for AC Milan in a commanding 3-0 aggregate victory.
Numerous players have donned the jerseys of both PSG and AC Milan over the years, underscoring the strong and enduring relationship between the two clubs. In July 2012, PSG completed the superstar signings of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva from AC Milan. Both players were beloved by fans in Milan and Paris, much like Ronaldinho and Thiago Motta.
A procession of top-quality talent has made the transition between these two clubs. George Weah, Leonardo, Jeremy Menez, and Alex all switched from the blue and red of Paris to the black and red of AC Milan. In recent years, Alessandro Florenzi joined this list, while Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma moved in the opposite direction.
Additionally, Ray Wilkins, Marco Simone, Bruno N'Gotty, and Vikash Dhorasoo complete the list of players who have transferred between AC Milan and PSG.
