Luis Miguel Biography

Luis Miguel was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in April 1970, and he was coached by his father, who would go on to become his manager, to take heed of the stage presence and performance skills of American superstar Elvis Presley.

Incredibly, he released his debut album on EMI Records at the age of 12, with Un Sol proving a big success in Mexico and Argentina. At the age of 14 he earned his first Grammy Awards win, picking up the award for Best Mexican-American Performance for the track Me Gustas Tal Come Eres for his duet with Sheena Easton.

By the mid-1980s, his style had evolved into a Spanish pop-rock direction, and the release of his fourth studio album, Palabra de Honor, helped thrust him further into the spotlight. His 1991 release Romance went on to sell an astonishing eight million copies, and its follow-up, 1994's Segundo Romance, became his first big US Billboard Album Chart success.

By this time, his moniker of El Sol de México was very much in effect, and his superstar status made him one of the best-selling artists in Latin America, and his live shows were attended by record-breaking audiences.

In 1997, his twelfth studio album, Romances, achieved his best-ever placing on the mainstream US charts, reaching number 14. The album featured a string of big singles, including Por Debajo de la Mesa, Contigo and Sabo a Mi.

His prolific output and constant touring have helped keep Luis Miguel at the top for decades.

In 2017, he released his 20th studio album, ¡México Por Siempre!, which was yet another commercially successful and critically acclaimed hit.

Across 2018 and 2019, Luis Miguel toured the world supporting the release of the album, playing over 120 dates to a combined audience of over one million, making it one of the biggest concert tours of all time at this point in time.

This was followed by a Netflix show, further broadening the Luis Miguel brand.

Luis Miguel has sold over 60 million records worldwide and won a host of awards, including (as of 2024) six Grammy Awards, six Latin Grammy Awards, a string of Billboard Latin Music Awards and an MTV Video Music Award in 1993.

Over the years Luis Miguel's popularity has expanded beyond Mexico and Central America and he has become a box office superstar worldwide, completing tours in front of huge crowds. His shows are now among the favorite events of the year globally.
