Taylor Swift’s three live shows in Vienna were cancelled on Wednesday night, after two men were arrested over an alleged terror plot targeting the Ernst Happel Stadium.
A total of 200,000 fans were looking forward to seeing the 34-year-old global icon over three nights at Austria’s biggest stadium.
The event organiser, Barracuda Music, posted on Instagram: “We have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety” after “confirmation of [the] planned terrorist attack”.
The two suspects, with ties to the terrorist group Islamic State, were arrested on Wednesday morning.
Vienna state police director Franz Ruf confirmed that the Taylor Swift concerts were a target. “During our investigations, we identified preparatory actions and noted that the 19-year-old suspect had a particular focus on the Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna,” Mr Ruf said.
Taylor Swift Faced With Her “Biggest Fear”
In 2019, Swift wrote for Elle at the end of her “Reputation” tour. When writing about her “Biggest Fear”, Swift admitted that she was very concerned about the safety of her fans.
“After the Manchester Arena bombing and the Vegas concert shooting, I was completely terrified to go on tour this time because I didn’t know how we were going to keep 3 million fans safe over seven months,” wrote Swift.
“There was a tremendous amount of planning, expense, and effort put into keeping my fans safe,” she added.
She’s due to perform at Wembley Stadium in London next, and extra precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of all attendees.
