The first Copa America took place in 1916 and involved just four nations in what was a fairly modest affair. Slowly but surely, the event has grown in stature with the number of entrants doubling to eight by 1947 and up to ten by 1975.
In 1993 invitees for the tournament stretched beyond South America, with nations from North and Central America also being included from here on in. Indeed, teams from Japan and Qatar have also been involved in previous editions of the event, helping to further exposure of the Copa America.

Chile took part in the inaugural Copa America in 1916, but it took a decade for La Roja to earn their first victory in the tournament.
In 1955 and 1956, they finished as runners-up, a feat they repeated in 1979 and 1987, and a fourth-place finish was secured in 1999 as Chile grew in confidence in the competition.
2015 saw Chile finally win their first Copa America crown, a full 99 years since they first appeared in the tournament.
Their victory on home soil owed a lot to top talents like Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez and Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal.
In the Copa America Final, they took on Argentina, who were the overwhelming favourites, and Chile held on to secure a goalless draw after 120 minutes before both Gonzalo Higuain and Ever Banega failed to score their penalties in the shoot-out, handing the Chileans their first-ever title.
Amazingly a year later, they repeated the feat. This time the tournament was hosted by the United States, and again they faced Argentina in a game that once again finished 0-0 and again went to penalties.
Astonishingly, history repeated itself, and Argentina choked. FC Barcelona star Lionel Messi was one of those who didn’t net their penalties, and that gave Chile back-to-back successes over their esteemed rivals.
As of 2023, no nation has won the Copa America on more occasions than Argentina, and as well as winning the competition on numerous occasions, they have had a knack for losing a fair number of finals as well.
Argentina hosted the first-ever Copa America and finished as runners-up in three of the first four tournaments. La Albiceleste won their first title in 1921, and by 1959 that tally had increased to 12, such was their early dominance in the competition.
Between 1959 and 1991, they failed to win a single Copa America title, which was in marked contrast to their form in the FIFA World Cup, which they had managed to win twice in that period.
Back-to-back titles came in 1991 and 1993, fueled by the goal-scoring exploits of Serie A goal machine Gabriel Batistuta.
There then followed a 28-year drought that saw Argentina lose four Copa America finals, two of which came against Chile and the other pair coming against hated rivals Brazil. That run of misfortune came to a halt in 2021 when former Real Madrid, PSG, and Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria netted the only goal in a victory over Brazil, which gave them their 15th title.
Generally speaking, when Chile have taken on Argentina in the Copa America, they have usually lost.
Clearly, those two previously mentioned finals, in 2015 and 2016, that saw Chile victorious were massive successes, but they are still, on the whole, the exception to the rule.
In 2019 the two teams played in the third-place playoff in Sao Paulo, and goals from Sergio Aguero and Paulo Dybala gave Argentina a 2-1 win.
At the 2021 Copa America, the two teams were drawn into the same group, and Lionel Messi opened the scoring for Lionel Scaloni’s side before Eduardo Vargas scored the equalizer early in the second half, and the game ended in a draw.
