John Mayer, a long-term fan of the Grateful Dead, guest hosted The Late Show in February 2015 and chose to invite guitarist Bob Weir for a studio performance, which began the ball rolling on the Dead and Company.

Dead and Company went on an extensive summer tour in 2017, playing 20 shows across North America. Among the highlights of that road trip were their two shows at Chicago's Wrigley Field, where they played to a combined audience of almost 80,000.
