GNK Dinamo Zagreb History

FD Dinamo was founded in June 1945, and since then the club has been subject to several name changes. In recognition of the club's roots, the name was altered to HAŠK Građanski in 1991 before reverting to Croatia Zagreb two years later. In February 2000, the more popular 'Dinamo Zagreb' was adopted as the club's official name.

The Zagreb-based outfit have emerged as the most successful team in Croatian football, with no fewer than 23 league titles since the country regained independence in 1991.

Dinamo have been semi-regular competitors in the UEFA Champions League, but have continually failed to progress beyond the group stage. In recent years they have shared a Champions League group with European heavyweights Manchester City, AC Milan & Chelsea.

Dinamo Zagreb advanced to the Europa League quarter-finals in 2021, but lost out to eventual champions Villarreal.

Mario Mandžukić is another well-known former player of Dinamo Zagreb, in addition to a handful of other Croatia internationals such as Mateo Kovačić, Dejan Lovren & Joško Gvardiol, as well as Spain midfielder Dani Olmo.

Dinamo's main rivals are Hajduk Split, with this particular feud known as the 'Eternal Derby'.

Under Yugoslav rule there were also tensions between Dinamo Zagreb & Red Star Belgrade, with the animosity still remaining even after the dissolution of Yugoslavia in 1992.

Dinamo Zagreb Stadium

Stadion Maksimir has been the home of Dinamo Zagreb since 1948. The ground used to have 35,423 seats, though the capacity was reduced to 25,912 following the 2020 Zagreb earthquake, thus revoking the venue's status as the largest football stadium in Croatia.
