Elbow History

Elbow were formed in 1990 when Guy Garvey teamed up with Mark Potter and Craig Potter, and along with Richard Jupp and Pete Turner, the group started to gain a reputation in the Manchester area, where they originated as a leading indie band having met in Sixth Form college.

After a number of setbacks, the band finally released their debut album, Asleep in the Back, in 2001, and it drew widespread acclaim and was shortlisted for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize.

The album contained hit singles Red, Powder Blue and Newborn. The second album released by the lifelong friends, Cast of Thousands, grew from that initial success and broke into the top ten on the UK charts and in 2005, the band released Leaders of the Free World.

Their fourth studio album, The Seldom Seen Kid, put them well and truly on the music map as it sold over a million copies in the UK alone and earned rave reviews. Singles from the album included Grounds for Divorce and the live favourite, One Day Like This, which went to number four on the UK charts and was a hit across Europe.

Build a Rocket Boys, their 2011 release, went to number two in the UK charts, and that was followed by The Take Off and Landing of Everything (2014), Little Fictions (2017) and Giants of All Sizes (2019), all of which went to number one, showing the consistency that Elbow had achieved. In 2016 drummer Richard Jupp left the band.

Indeed, the success of all the band's studio albums is a testament to the talent resplendent within the band, from the emotive and unique lyrical approach adopted to tell the most remarkable stories to the soundscapes created to help make Elbow a giant on the British contemporary music scene.

Elbow's history of success continued with their 2021 studio album, Flying Dream 1, which was once again heralded by critics and fans alike.

The longevity and continued success of the band is chiefly down to all the members being in sync and perfectly coordinated in terms of their musical output, and that is very much evident from their live shows.
