Juventus vs Inter Milan History

Juventus FC was founded in 1897, making it one of the oldest football clubs in Italy. This was 11 years before the formation of Internazionale, which came about as a result of a rift within the club known today as AC Milan.

Juve and Inter shared a pitch for the first time in 1909, though it wasn’t until the 60s when a Italian sports journalist coined the term “Derby d’Italia”. Today, this rivalry is widely considered the most hostile fixture between two clubs from different cities within Italy.

The Turin-based outfit is by far the most decorated club in Italian football, with no fewer than 36 league titles as of 2023. All but two of these successes have been achieved in the Serie A era, which commenced in 1929.

Known as ‘La Vecchia Signora’ (The Old Lady), Juventus captured five Scudetti in the 1970s and then another four the following decade. The club's most fruitful chapter came in the 2010s, as the Bianconeri claimed nine consecutive league titles until 2020, extending Juve's record tally to 36 league championships.

Inter Milan enjoyed success in the 1960s, winning Serie A three times as well as back-to-back triumphs in the European Cup. The Nerazzurri went under the radar for much of the next four decades, but they reemerged in some fashion by hoisting the Scudetto in five successive seasons until 2009/10. That campaign also saw Inter claim European honours, as José Mourinho's side defeated Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League final.

Inter once again ascended to the throne of Italian football in 2021, ending an 11-year wait to reclaim the Scudetto, during which time Juventus had mostly dominated the division.

Giuseppe Meazza, after whom the San Siro is officially named, played for both these clubs and scored a total 12 goals in the Derby d’Italia. Former Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero netted nine times against Inter.

The following players all moved directly from Juventus to Inter Milan:

• Former Netherlands international Edgar Davids played 235 times for Juventus, more than he did for any other team, prior to joining Inter on a free transfer in 2004.
• Zlatan Ibrahimović left Ajax for Juventus in 2004, though he traded his black and white shirt for black and blue just two years later following Juve’s demotion to Serie B. The Swedish striker would also go on to play for AC Milan as well as a host of other top European clubs, including FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester United.
• Patrick Vieira became a Juventus player in 2005 after leaving Arsenal, having made more than 400 appearances for the Gunners. Just a year later the France midfielder signed for Inter, as one of several players to depart Juve that summer.
• Colombia winger Juan Cuadrado amassed upwards of 300 outings for Juventus before departing to Inter on a free transfer in 2023.

These eternal rivals have shared more than 250 (competitive) meetings, with many memorable goals and decisive moments forming part of the fabled history of the Derby d'Italia.

Filippo Inzaghi and Alessandro Del Piero were on the scoresheet as Juventus stormed to a 3-1 victory in this fixture during the 2000/01 Serie A campaign. The Bianconeri won by the same scoreline in February 2014, thanks to goals from Giorgio Chiellini and Arturo Vidal, on their way to winning a third consecutive league title and 30th Scudetto overall.

In March 2020, shortly before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Juventus ran out 2-0 winners over Inter. Aaron Ramsey and Paulo Dybala were the goalscorers.

These rivals played out a thrilling five-goal affair towards the end of the 2020/21 season. Cristiano Ronaldo had put Juve in the lead before the Nerazzurri drew level through Romelu Lukaku. Inter were handed a lifeline when Chiellini scored an own goal in the closing stages, but Juan Cuadrado scored twice to seal a 3-2 victory for the Old Lady.
