Olympique Lyon History

Olympique de Lyon was initially formed under the multi-sports club Lyon Olympique Universitaire in the late 19th century. The football club became its own entity in 1950, adopting the name Olympique Lyonnais.

OL won the Coupe de France (French Cup) for the first time in 1964 and then captured the trophy again three years later. Further successes followed in 1973, 2008 and 2012. Then, in 2006, Lyon suffered a 3-1 defeat to AC Milan at the San Siro following a goalless draw at the Stade de Gerland. The second leg seemed destined for extra-time before Filippo Inzaghi and Andriy Shevchenko both found the back of the net for Milan in the closing stages.

OL have failed to celebrate Ligue 1 honours since 2008, though they have managed to finish as runners-up on multiple occasions. On the European stage, Lyon advanced to the Europa League quarter-finals in the 2016/17 campaign but narrowly lost to Ajax, 5-4 on aggregate.
