Olympiacos FC History

The club was founded in 1925, in the Greek city of Piraeus. The institution set a goal to develop its athletes across multiple sporting codes.

Olympiacos has continued to dominate the Greek footballing scene for much of the 21st century, more often than not emerging as champions of the Super League. In terms of competing in Europe, Olympiacos reached the UEFA Champions league quarter-finals in the 1998/99 season. Since then, however, the Greek side has failed to reach the same stage of UEFA's premier club competition.

Thrylos reached the latter stages of the 2023/24 UEFA Conference League, overcoming Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Round of 16 before edging past Turkish outfit Fenerbahce in the quarter-finals. Olympiacos next faced Aston Villa in the semi-finals and claimed a remarkable 6-2 aggregate win over the Premier League team as Moroccan forward Ayoub El Kaabi scored five goals over two legs, including a hat-trick at Villa Park.

Olympiacos hence advanced to the UEFA Conference League final, held in the Greek city of Athens, to face Italian club Fiorentina. The home side claimed a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to El Kaabi's winning goal late in extra-time. The striker netted his 16th goal of the tournament to hand Olympiacos its first ever European title.

Giorgos Sideris, who played for Olympiacos throughout the 1960s, is considered to be the club's all-time top goalscorer with 225 goals. In more modern times, nobody has scored more goals than Alexis Alexandris. The ex-Greece striker netted 170 times in 333 outings for Thrylos.

Predrag Đorđević is the most-capped Olympiacos player in history; the 37-cap Serbia international ran out no fewer than 493 times for the Greek outfit. Kyriakos Karataidis, who was at the club from 1988-2001, racked up 442 appearances in Olympiacos colours.

Georgios Anatolakis, Kostas Fortounis and Dimitrios Mavrogenidis each amassed in excess of 300 appearances for the team.

The Karaiskakis Stadium opened its doors in 1896 and was initially known as the Neo Phaliron Velodrome. Olympiacos FC adopted the ground in 1925, when the club was founded.
