The club was founded in 1926 by Greek refugees who had fled to Thessaloniki following the Greco-Turkish War.
PAOK Thessaloniki won its first domestic title in 1971/72, defeating league champions Panathinaikos in the final of the Greek Football Cup. The following year PAOK came close to clinching a maiden league championship, but finished just 2 points behind Olympiacos.
Finally, in 1976, PAOK became champions of the Greek top flight, known as the Alpha Ethniki at the time. The following year the Greek outfit reached the last-16 of the European Cup (precursor to the Champions League) but lost out to Dynamo Kyiv.
The club's second league title came in 1985, though almost 35 years passed before that tally increased to three. PAOK finally emerged as champions in the 2018/19 Greece Super League season, going unbeaten for the entire league campaign.
PAOK were crowned Greek champions again in 2024, for what was its fourth league championship. This put Răzvan Lucescu's side in contention for UEFA Champions League football, though they would first have to overcome preliminary qualifiers.
The Greek club had previously played in the UEFA Europa League in no fewer than eight seasons, but consistently failed to advance beyond the group stage.
The team's main adversaries are Olympiacos, with this rivalry considered to be the fiercest intercity football rivalry in Greece.
Panathinaikos & AEK, both based in Athens, are also deemed as rivals of PAOK.
Toumba Stadium has been the home ground of PAOK ever since the venue first opened in 1959.
