Oxford United History & Info

The club was founded in 1893, originally named Headington, though only in 1960 was it reverted to Oxford United Football Club.

It was two years later that Oxford Utd made its Football League debut in the old Fourth Division. OUFC won promotion to the Third Division in 1965 and then climbed further to the old Second Division in the 1967/68 season.

Oxford suffered relegation to the third tier in the mid-1970s before achieving back-to-back promotions from 1984-85, securing top-flight status just 23 years after joining the Football League.

The U's clinched their first major trophy in 1986, thanks to a 3-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers in the League Cup final at Wembley Stadium. Oxford Utd also overcame Aston Villa in the semi-finals, 4-3 on aggregate.

In more recent years Oxford United have mostly played in League One since gaining promotion in 2016. OUFC were beaten by Manchester City in the 2019/20 EFL Cup quarter-finals, having lost to the same opponents the previous season.

The U's were victorious in the 2023/24 play-offs to earn promotion to the EFL Championship. Playing in the second tier for the first time since 1999 means that OUFC tickets are expected to be of high interest among the club's supporters.

Oxford United Rivalries

Swindon Town are considered to be the fiercest rivals of Oxford United, with these teams usually facing off in the lower tiers of the Football League. Tickets for these matches may be more expensive than the average ticket price for Oxford Utd games. Based west of London, the two clubs are separated by around 33 miles.

The U's also have a hostile relationship with Reading, though the two sides have met very infrequently in the 21st century.

Oxford United Stadium

Kassam Stadium (also sometimes referred to as Grenoble Road) has been the home of OUFC since 2001. The ground has a 12,500 capacity, though a new 16,000-seater stadium is expected to open in 2026, expanding the ground's capacity by 28%.

The U's previously played home games at the Manor Ground from 1925 until closure & demolition in the early 21st century.
