PSG vs Marseille History

The first time these teams shared a pitch was in December 1971, one year after the founding of Paris Saint-Germain. The Vélodrome was the scene of the first-ever meeting between these modern-day rivals, as Marseille won by four goals to two.

Only in 1978 did PSG finally record a first triumph over Marseille, though the Parisiens did so in quite spectacular fashion with a 5-1 thumping of Les Phocéens. PSG claimed a first away victory at the Vélodrome in December 1979, with a hard-earned 2-0 win.

This rivalry is the biggest and most anticipated fixture on the French football calendar, though there are contrasting stories pertaining to the origin of the rivalry itself. Some have suggested this derby only truly evolved in the 1990s, while others believe it can be traced back to the mid-70s.

PSG claimed an 11th league title in 2023, inching further ahead of their bitter rivals; Marseille had been crowned champions of the French top flight for the ninth time in 2010. Les Phocéens enjoyed great success in the late 1980s and early 90s, winning four consecutive Ligue 1 titles as well as the UEFA Champions League in 1992/93.

PSG have struggled for several years in their attempts to capture UEFA's top prize. The Parisiens reached the Champions League final in 2019/20, but lost out to Bayern Munich.

These players were formerly on the books of both these rivals during their careers:

• George Weah scored 55 goals in 138 appearances for PSG during his three-year stay in the French capital. He moved to AC Milan in the summer of 1995 and was named the recipient of the Ballon d'Or award towards the end of that year. Nearing the end of his playing career, Weah made 20 appearances in a Marseille jersey.
• Claude Makélélé had a brief spell as a Marseille player in the 1997/98 season, before he had established himself as one of the finest midfielders in the world. Makélélé went on to represent Real Madrid and Chelsea, and he also racked up 71 caps for France. Following three years at PSG, Makélélé hung up his boots in 2011.
• Gabriel Heinze played 132 times for PSG, more than he did for any other club throughout his 17-year senior career. The Argentina defender signed for Manchester United and later Real Madrid before he joined Marseille in 2009.
• Lassana Diarra played for a number of different clubs, including English sides Chelsea and Arsenal in the early years of his pro career. After switching to Real Madrid in 2009, he amassed 116 outings with the Spanish giants. Diarra would later play for both Marseille and PSG, though he featured just 19 times for the Parisiens prior to hanging up his boots in 2019.
• Hatem Ben Arfa moved from Lyon to Marseille in 2008 and subsequently showed glimpses of his quality, with 15 goals in 91 games for Les Phocéens. The attacking midfielder earned a switch to Premier League side Newcastle United in the 2010/11 season and he would later complete a free transfer to PSG in 2016. Ben Arfa turned out 32 times for the Parisiens before he was released at the end of the 2017/18 season.

Hatem Ben Arfa opened the scoring for Marseille when they visited PSG in the 2009/10 season. Les Phocéens ran out 3-0 winners in this edition of the derby, on their way to capturing Ligue 1 honours for a ninth time.

Kylian Mbappé and Edinson Cavani were among the scorers when the Parisiens cruised to a 3-0 victory over their bitter rivals in February 2018. The following year Mbappé was again on target in this fixture, scoring twice in a 4-0 triumph for Paris Saint-Germain.

Achraf Hakimi, Randal Kolo Muani, and Gonçalo Ramos were all on the scoresheet as PSG picked up a precious 4-0 win against Marseille in the 2023/24 campaign.
