RB Leipzig History
The club was founded in 2009 when parent company Red Bull GmbH purchased the playing rights of fifth-tier side SSV Markranstädt, which had been struggling financially.
RB Leipzig secured several promotions to rise up the German football pyramid and gained top-flight status in 2016 with promotion to the German Bundesliga. Many other member clubs were aggrieved by the emergence of RB Leipzig as it contradicted the 50+1 rule regarding ownership of football clubs in Germany.
In what was the club's inaugural season in the Bundesliga, RB Leipzig ended runners-up to Bayern Munich and effectively qualified for the following UEFA Champions League campaign. In the years to follow Leipzig have continued to challenge towards the top of the Bundesliga standings, often overcoming giants Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen.
In Europe, RB Leipzig have progressed to the knockout stages on more than one occasion. Die Rotten Bullen (The Red Bulls) defeated Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid on their way to reaching the Champions League semi-finals in the 2019/20 campaign.
The German side advanced to the Round of 16 in both the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, but ultimately lost out to the eventual champions Manchester City & Real Madrid.
RB Leipzig Players
The Leipzig outfit has garnered a reputation of acquiring young players for modest transfer fees before developing them and selling them to European heavyweights for major profits.
The likes of Timo Werner, Christopher Nkunku, Naby Keïta, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Joško Gvardiol all spent time at RB Leipzig before they were signed by Premier League clubs (namely Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City) for fees in excess of €50m.
Dani Olmo, who joined Leipzig in 2020, was acquired by his boyhood club FC Barcelona in 2024 for a transfer fee around €60m.
RB Leipzig Stadium: Red Bull Arena
The Red Bull Arena, formerly known as the Zentralstadion, has been the home of RB Leipzig since 2010.
The stadium has a 47,069 capacity for league matches and it was used as a venue for the Euro 2024 finals in Germany, with the ground referred to as the 'Leipzig Stadium' for the duration of the tournament.
