Royale Union Saint-Gilloise History

Founded in 1897, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise is one of the oldest professional football clubs in Belgium. Union SG enjoyed much success in the early 20th century, winning multiple league and cup titles.

After Union dropped out of the First Division in 1973 the club went almost 50 years away from the top flight, until finally in 2021 the club gained promotion to the Belgian Pro League. Tony Bloom, chairman of Premier League team Brighton & Hove Albion, became a majority shareholder of Union SG in 2018.

Since returning to the top flight Les Unionistes have resumed their upward trajectory. They spectacularly finished runners-up in the 2021/22 Pro League, just a year after achieving promotion.

In the 2022/23 season, Union SG competed in European competition for the first time since the 1960s. The Belgian club took part in the UEFA Europa League and would reach the quarter-finals, but ultimately lost out to German side Bayer Leverkusen.

The following season saw Les Unionistes return to the Europa League, although they would drop out of the competition after finishing third in their group which also consisted of Liverpool FC. Union SG were demoted to the Conference League, where they overcame Bundesliga team Eintracht Frankfurt in the knockout round playoffs. Union then met Turkish outfit Fenerbahce in the Round of 16.
