Shakira Biography

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born in February 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia and started performing at an early age.

Her debut album, Magia, was released in 1991, and it was her fourth album, Donde Estan los Ladrones? which saw her break into the mainstream. That album reached the top of the US Latin charts and sold over four million copies worldwide.

Shakira truly became a household name with her fifth album, Laundry Service, which was released in 2001 and went on to sell over 13 million copies. That record included the hits Whenever, Wherever, Underneath Your Clothes and Objection.

Oral Fixation Vol.1 and Vol.2 cemented her standing as one of the most popular pop stars on the planet and saw her hit Hips Don't Lie top the charts all around the world. In 2007 she teamed up with Beyonce to release Beautiful Liar, another big hit and her 2010 hit, Waka Waka, became a worldwide anthem and was created to support the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

2010's Sale el Sol also proved a commercial success, spawning hit songs Loca (with Dizzee Rascal) and Rabiosa (with Pitbull). In 2017 Shakira released her eleventh studio album, El Dorado, which gave her yet another US Billboard number one.

In 2024 she released Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, which went to the top of the charts around the world and confirmed her undisputed status as a Latin musical goddess.
