Wilco History

Wilco were born after the break up of Uncle Tupelo, with Jeff Tweedy teaming up with the remaining members of the band, minus Jay Farrar, and they released their debut album A.M. in 1995. Though the album secured positive reviews, it failed to chart in the US or the UK.

The follow up, 1996's Being There, a double album, did better and helped to raise the band's status but it was the band's fourth's album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot that really pushed them into the limelight. The record proved a big commercial success, getting to number 13 on the US Billboard Albums Chart and also doing well in the UK and across Europe. It sold over half a million copies in the United States alone.

The back story behind its success is almost as well documented and known as the record itself. The band was dismissed by their then label, Reprise Records and the album rejected, leading the band buy back the album for free, with it going to be a massive success.

The whole situation was covered by an award-nominated documentary, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco.

Wilco teamed up with Billy Bragg on to album projects, with Mermaid Avenue and Mermaid Avenue Vol.II, and this saw the band produce a number of memorable tracks, including California Stars.

It has proven to be a record with an astonishing legacy and is considered by many as among the best ever in the genre. The band followed that release with a prolific series of commercially and critically acclaimed records with A Ghost is Born (2004), Sky Blue Sky (2007), which features the classic track Impossible Germany, Wilco (The Album) in 2009 and The Whole Love (2011), all breaking into the top ten in the United States.

The Whole Love saw a string of successful singles released, including I Might and Speak Into The Rose.

Over this period of time the group grew in stature as a live act and continue to be considered one of the best live performers around.

2015's Star Wars is considered among the band's best, and their thirteenth album, Cousin, was released in 2023 and subsequently was named by Rolling Stone as one of the best albums of the year.
