Fiorentina have a long history in UEFA competitions, having taken part in the second edition of the European Cup in 1956/57. La Viola marched all the way to the final but lost out to Real Madrid, 2-0, at the Santiago Bernabéu. Fiorentina would play in UEFA's premier competition only once more in 1969/70 before the tournament rebranded to the Champions League in the early 90s.

Almost a decade passed before the Italian outfit returned to the Champions League arena, though another group-stage exit ensued with Fiorentina unable to overcome German champions Bayern Munich and their French counterparts Lyon. The following season Fiorentina spectacularly topped its Champions League group, ahead of Lyon and Liverpool, before suffering a heartbreaking exit to Bayern Munich in the Round of 16, by virtue of the away-goal rule.

Fiorentina reached the Europa League semi-finals in 2015, though they were no match for eventual champions Sevilla. Unai Emery's team ran out 5-0 winners on aggregate.

More recently, Fiorentina took part in the 2023 UEFA Conference League final. La Viola lost out to Premier League side West Ham United, 2-1, in Prague. The very next season Fiorentina once again advanced to the final of the Conference League, thanks to a 4-3 aggregate victory over Club Brugge in the semi-finals.

Fiorentina first featured in UEFA's tertiary club competition during the 2022/23 campaign. Vincenzo Italiano’s charges defeated Sporting Braga, Sivasspor, Lech Poznań, and Basel on the way to the UEFA Conference League final in Prague.

In what was their first European final in more than 30 years, La Viola were ultimately beaten by West Ham United. Saïd Benhrama put the Hammers ahead from the penalty spot just after the hour mark though Giacomo Bonaventura soon levelled the scoring, only for winger Jarrod Bowen to score a late winner for the London outfit.

The following season Fiorentina contested an enticing last-16 tie against Maccabi Haifa, with the first leg ending 4-3 in favour of the Italian club. A 1-1 stalemate at the Stadio Artemio Franchi saw Fiorentina advance to the quarter-finals, in which the men in purple claimed a 2-0 aggregate win over Viktoria Plzen. The team based in Tuscany then faced Belgian side Club Brugge in the semi-finals.
