Atletico Madrid History
The club was founded in 1903, by a group of three Basque students living in Madrid. Later, it would become the top 20 most valuable teams in the world, with a $1.85 billion valuation in 2025. The club is owned by a couple of shareholders and is led by President Enrique Cerezo Torres, who’s been in this position since 2003.
Atletico’s previous home stadium was the Vicente Calderon, in south Madrid. Completed in 1966 and used until the Metropolitano was completed in 2017.
Many superstars have worn the Los Indios kit, including Adelardo Rodríguez, Luis Aragonés, Adrián Escudero, Fernando Torres, and many many more. Today’s squad is led by Marcos Llorente, Koke, Jan Oblak and many international superstars who have been recruited in recent years. Joao Felix is the most expensive signing in the club's history, joining from Benfica for €127m in 2019.
The most successful head coach Atletico has had is by far, the current manager Diego Simeone. The Argentine replaced Gregorio Manzano in 2011 and since then has brought two Europa League titles, two Super Cups, two La Liga trophies, a Copa del Rey, plus a few other trophies and achievements. Another important coach in Atletico’s history has been Luis Aragonés, who was also a player for Atletico.
Having joined the club as an 8-year-old, Koke has played more than 700 times in Atletico colours. He holds the all-time record for the most appearances in Atlético Madrid history, followed by Adelardo Rodríguez with 551. Antoine Griezmann holds the record of goals scored for the team in all competitions, having overtaken Luis Aragonés' long-standing tally of 172 in January 2024.
