Chelsea have not endured the best of starts to the 2023/24 season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side entered the October international break with 11 points from eight matches in the Premier League. So far, the Blues have won only three times this league campaign, with two of those coming in their last two outings at Fulham and Burnley.

Chelsea are one of the most successful football teams in England, particularly over the last two decades. No fewer than five times have they been crowned Premier League champions, supplemented by eight FA Cup titles.

The Blues also boast considerable pedigree in European competitions, having won the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League twice apiece since 2012.

However, as of late, the tide has been turning at Stamford Bridge. It has been a turbulent and uncertain period following the change of ownership in 2022 when the consortium headed by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital acquired the West London club.

This period of transition has been characterised by a flurry of personnel changes, with a host of new faces on and off the pitch.

Pochettino was appointed manager following a worst-ever Premier League campaign for the Blues, in which they picked up just 11 wins and a total of 44 points.

The Chelsea boss is about to embark on a particularly difficult run of fixtures, which will see his team share a pitch with some of the best and most dominant sides in the league.

Chelsea vs Arsenal – 21st October 2023

This encounter will be extra special for Pochettino, who comes up against his former employers for the first time since leaving the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019.

The Argentine coach spent five years in charge of the Lilywhites, during which time there were clear signs of progress for both the team as well as the manager himself. Pochettino remarkably steered Tottenham to the UEFA Champions League final in 2018/19 but ultimately lost to Liverpool at Estadio Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid.

However, Spurs aren’t looking back and instead are now basking with their new manager Ange Postecoglou. The ex-Australia and Celtic head coach has galvanised what was a broken squad in north London, with Tottenham at the summit of the league table and undefeated after eight games.

Postecoglou has a terrific track record in home matches which, together with the vocal support at Spurs’ stadium, may prove a major obstacle for Chelsea to overcome when they head to Tottenham.

Chelsea vs Manchester City – 12th November 2023

Of course, the Spaniard is now four years deeper into his project at the Etihad Stadium and thus his side will be a tremendously tough nut to crack in Pochettino’s first season in charge of Chelsea.
