Though it would be fair to say that 2022/23 in the French top tier played out pretty much as everyone would have predicted, PSG certainly didn’t have it all their own way, and while the big-spending outfit won the title, they did so under a decent amount of pressure from the also-rans.
Ligue 1 is growing in interest, not least because the big boys in town, Paris Saint Germain, have assembled something of a dream team at the Parc des Princes and football fans the world over want to experience what the best of French domestic football has to offer.

PSG Ease to Yet Another Title
Christophe Galtier took charge of PSG and their array of superstars and had effectively one job, winning the Champions League. It’s a task he failed to achieve, losing to Bayern Munich in the Round of 16.
Even though PSG won the Ligue 1 title again and did so with weeks to spare, the club’s fanbase were still not happy, and it appears that the club’s megastars Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos are on their way out, and there may well be a fair bit of rebuilding taking place over the summer.
Interest in seeing PSG live continues to grow, and you can get PSG tickets for 2023/24 at SeatPick for all their domestic and European clashes.
Kylian Mbappe once again slayed all before him, and Neymar seems set to remain in the French capital so there is still a great deal of talent available for whoever manages them next season, as it will not be Galtier who gets the opportunity to do so.
Lens Mount Strong Push, More to Come?
Franck Haise worked wonders at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, securing a second-place finish for Lens, their best Ligue 1 season since 2001-02, and young Belgian forward Lois Openda was a big standout star, netting 21 times in his first season at the club.
A run of seven straight wins meant that Lens only finished one point off PSG when the season came to an end, and they eased Marseille out of the race to finish as the best of the rest.
Marseille will be looking to build on their third-place finish but will do so without manager Igor Tudor who elected to leave the Stade Velodrome when the season came to a close.
There is a sense that Marseille will have to freshen things up for 2023/24 as a number of their most effective players are certainly in the latter stages of their careers, with star names like Dimitri Payet and Alexis Sanchez now in their mid-30s.
Plucky Reims Enjoy the Limelight
One team that earned a great deal of plaudits was Reims, with the plucky minnows of Ligue 1, who have, of course, won the Ligue 1 title a number of times in the past (albeit over 50 years ago), going on a 19-game unbeaten run under new English boss Will Still, this run and their overall impressive season was greatly aided by the efforts of on-loan Arsenal forward Folarin Balogun, who scored 21 Ligue 1 goals.
Who’s Up, Who’s Down, and Who’s Europe Bound
Angers secured just four wins all season and finished rock bottom, and they’ll be joined in Ligue 2 by Troyes, Ajaccio, and Auxerre.
In the other direction come Le Havre and Metz, with the Ligue 1 reducing to 18 teams for 2023/24.
PSG, Lens, and Marseille will feature in the Champions League, while Rennes and Toulouse will play in the Europa League, and Lille have booked their spot in the Europa Conference League.
