Boxing History

The final title bout of Rocky Marciano's illustrious boxing career came in September 1955, against Archie Moore. More than 61,000 people attended this fight at Yankee Stadium in New York City, as Marciano retained his title to extend his professional boxing record to 49 fights without defeat.

In October 1974, Muhammad Ali battled George Foreman in the famous 'Rumble in the Jungle'. The event was staged in Kinshasa, Zaire – today the Democratic Republic of Congo – in front of 60,000 spectators. Ali pursued his rope-a-dope tactics and went on to knock down his countryman in the 8th round, to regain the heavyweight championship.

Ali had previously fought Joe Frazier in 1971, in what was billed as the 'Fight of the Century'. Frazier won in 15 rounds by unanimous decision, in front of a sell-out crowd of 20,455 at Madison Square Garden. Ali and Frazier contested another two fights against one another, first in 1974 and then again the following year. The third and final instalment between the pair saw them face off in the 'Thrilla in Manila' in October 1975. The fight took place in the Philippines, where Ali won by TKO in the 14th round. More than 25,000 attended the event, making it the largest crowd for an indoor boxing match at the time.

In more recent times we've witnessed boxing become subject to extensive coverage from across the globe, with some events attracting huge attendances. Carl Froch knocked out compatriot George Groves in front of 80,000 at Wembley Stadium in May 2014. This became a British post-War record for a boxing event.

In April 2017, that record was broken when up to 90,000 attended the world heavyweight title fight between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko, also at Wembley. Another title fight at Wembley saw as many as 94,000 watch on as Tyson Fury defeated Dillian Whyte in April 2022.

Although the 2015 welterweight championship fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao only had 16,219 in-house spectators at the MGM Grand Arena, the event raked in a whopping 4.6 million pay-per-view purchases to make it the highest-grossing PPV in history.
