Brazil vs Sweden at the World Cup

The Nordic country then hosted the tournament in 1958, ending runners-up to Brazil, but only in 1994 did Sweden make a return to the latter stages of the World Cup with victory in the third place play-off.

These nations have shared a pitch several times at the FIFA World Cup, with their first such meeting taking place at the third edition of the showpiece event back in 1938. They met again at the following edition in 1950, with Brazil coming from behind to claim a 4-2 win over Sweden in the third place play-off.

Brazil defeated Sweden in the 1958 World Cup Final, despite the Swedes boasting home advantage. Teenage striker Pele netted twice for the Brazilians to record a 5-2 victory and capture their maiden world title.

The teams reconvened at the 1978 World Cup, playing out a 1-1 draw in the group stage. Their next clash came in 1990, again at the group stage, as Brazil ran out 2-1 winners against Sweden.

In 1994 Brazil & Sweden faced one another in the World Cup semi-finals, with more than 91,000 spectators in attendance at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Romario scored the decisive goal as the Seleção went on to beat Italy in the World Cup Final four days later.
